Rekeying when a housemate leaves

You have more right to change the locks than most renters think.
In Queensland a tenant can have locks changed and must give the lessor a key, and a lessor cannot unreasonably refuse. The practical version: if you are worried about who holds a key, rekeying is usually quick, cheap and within your rights.

What tenants and owners ask us
In Queensland, generally yes, and you must give the lessor or agent a copy of the new key. A lessor cannot unreasonably refuse. We are locksmiths rather than lawyers, so check the RTA guidance if your situation is unusual.
